ACT-SO Volunteer Corps – Resource Fact Sheet 

ACT-SO prides itself as an all volunteer program and as the largest chapter in the country, NYC ACT-SO operates its volunteer driven and led mentorship program and local Academic Competition like an autonomous local grassroots organization, we rely almost completely on local funding support from government agencies, foundations, individuals, and corporations. NYC ACT-SO is in need of volunteers in several program areas. You can tailor your involvement in ACT-SO around your schedule. Also, please pass along the names and addresses of anyone you know who might be interested in working with ACT-SOThe Program would benefit from direct financial funding as well as from in-kind services and volunteer efforts in the following areas:

National Competition:

Prepare Gold Medal winners for the National Completion in July
Chaperone students during the National Competition

In-kind Services and Gifts:

Printing of ACT-SO promotional materials, stationery, certificates
Equipment (DVD/VCR, projector, monitor, cameras, computers)
Access to technical facilities for science and visual arts students
Orientation receptions for recruiting coaches, judges and other sponsors

Career Development for ACT-SO participants:

Summer internships
Student symposiums on: college selection, application procedures and securing financial assistance; writing resumes and interviewing and other business skills

Volunteers to assist with:

Fundraising & Grant Writing
Saturday Enrichment Workshops – Coaching and mentoring the students
Outreach – “Adopt-a-School” recruiting of students from New York City high schools
Competition – Judging of student projects (by qualified professionals with appropriate experience and/or educational background)
Competition – Setup, registration, category facilitators, lunch coordination and other activities
Awards Ceremony – Event Coordination, planning and general production activities
Media – Collaboration throughout the program year to expand student outreach, community involvement and public awareness

Note: Time commitments for coaches may be as infrequent as 8 hours per month.
